OLD TOWN APARTMENTS
Just over 200 years ago Dubai was a barely regarded dependant of Abu Dhabi, all that was to change in 1833 when the Al Maktoum dynasty took control of the area with little or no resistance. This did lead however to a lot of friction between Abu Dhabi and the newly created emirate of Dubai. The next 140 years were largely spent under the protection of the British.
From the very beginning of its history, Dubai has promoted trade and taken a very pro-active attitude toward securing business. Of the other Emirates in the United Arab Emirates, Dubai is the only one which is not dependent on oil for its income, accounting for just 10% of GDP.
Dubai is a shoppers paradise, with some of the largest malls in the world and a huge duty free shopping area in Dubai International Airport. There are also many fine boutiques and excellent shops in the city center, as well as the mammoth Mall of Arabia which is due to open in 2008.
A city that encourages enterprise and innovation, Dubai is home to many major multinationals, as well boasting one of the world’s most daunting hotel developments, the Palm Island.
