Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania, boasting a population of over 550,000 in the city and almost two million people in the whole region, including the Vilnius city municipality and Vilnius County. Summers in Vilnius tend to be quite warm, and the nightlife scene in Vilnius is at its height with outdoor bars and cafés becoming very popular hangouts at all hours of the day and night.
The winters in Vilnius are probably as cold as the summers are hot, with temperatures below freezing throughout January and February. A popular activity during this time of the year is ice-fishing, which is achieved by drilling holes in the ice and simply fishing through the hole, typically accompanied by consuming large quantities of alcohol in order to stay warm.
