About City
About the City
Once just a small fishing village on the banks of the Amstel River; Amsterdam is today the largest city in the Netherlands as well as being the country’s cultural and financial centre. Amsterdam has one of the largest historic centres in Europe and is unique in having a series of concentric canals which were built in the 17th century, from which era most of the city centre still dates. Like Venice, Amsterdam is famous for being a city built on canals, but unlike Venice many of the houses by the canals are still owned and lived in as normal housing, although some have become office buildings or public buildings.
The centre of Amsterdam ranks as one of the most beguiling and charming city centres in all of Europe, where is it possible to take boat trips on the canals, or cycle alongside. Many of the buildings date from the Golden Age of the city during the 17th century, when Amsterdam was the richest city in Europe and one of the world’s greatest trading cities, with ships going to the four corners of the globe. The Golden Age came to an end with the Netherlands’ defeat at the hands of the British in the Anglo-Dutch Wars.
Amsterdam is a major player in the international diamond trade, the city ranking close to Antwerp in terms of significance. During the Second World War over 2000 of the city’s diamond cutters and polishers disappeared to the camps of the Third Reich. Several of the world’s most famous diamonds were cut and polished in Amsterdam, including the Cullinan, Koh-i-Noor as well as the world’s smallest diamond which has 57 facets and just 0.00012 carat.
Modern Amsterdam is a vibrant city which is famous for its liberal and tolerant attitude toward life and for its relaxed atmosphere. The city has a well deserved reputation for being a great place to party and really let your hair down. However, Amsterdam is also an incredibly beautiful and cultural city which has something offer everyone.
