Moscow boasts a total of five major airports, namely Sheremetyevo International Airport, Domodedovo International Airport, Bykovo Airport, Ostafievo International Airport and Vnukovo International Airport.
The main way to get around Moscow is the Metro, a world-renowned subway system distinguished by its ever-present artistic aesthetic, including murals, mosaics, and ornate chandeliers. Construction on the Metro began way back in 1935, and has since expanded several times, now including 12 separate lines and over 171 individual stops. With 7,000,000 riders each day and trains arriving every 90 seconds, Moscow’s Metro is definitely among the most active and sophisticated in the entire world.
For journeys outside the city center, an elaborate network of buses connects each Metro station to surrounding residential areas. Some suburbs and parts of the city are also connected by an electric trains. There are also trams and trolleybuses, providing a dizzying and never-ending array of options for getting yourself around. However, there are no night buses, trolleys or trams. If you're out late, your only option is to go by taxi.
In Russia, any car can function as a taxi; most private motorists will give you a lift, but only for money. Just wave at any car as if it were a taxi. Be sure to settle on a price before the trip begins, as even official taxi drivers probably won’t use a meter. The prices are almost always relatively low: it typically costs about five to seven dollars to get from the outskirts of Moscow to the city center, and perhaps only a couple of dollars to go from one place to another inside the center. Using an official taxi is safer and sometimes even cheaper, but there aren’t many taxis roaming the streets, except around very active spots.
Tremendous growth in traffic in recent years has resulted in more than 2.5 million vehicles driving around Moscow every day, causing ongoing problems in the form of traffic jams and insufficient car park facilities. Unless you have special needs or plan on a long-term visit involving frequent travel outside of the city, driving a car in Moscow might not be the ideal option for you. However, new freeways and roads are currently under construction in order to alleviate the traffic problems.
