The Plaza Mayor in Madrid was built during the reign of the Habsburgs and is today the central plaza of the Spanish capital. The Plaza Mayor is situated very close to the other famous plaza, Puerta del Sol. It has rectangular shape and nine entranceways, and is surrounded by many three-storey residential buildings. The Plaza Mayor used to serve as a scene for various events from open-air markets to bullfights, soccer games and sadly for public executions during the Spanish Inquisition. Today the square features many pleasant cafes, traditional stores and souvenir shops and is among the main tourist attractions in Madrid.
