Mentioned in the Domesday Book as a hamlet of a mere handful of people Birmingham’s rise to being one England’s greatest cities has been nothing short of meteoric. In the 12th Century Peter de Birmingham established the first market in the city’s history and from there the city grew into a major manufacturing base. The city has over the years, as well as in the present, been home to the cloth, automotive, chocolate and jewellery industries.
Many of Britain’s great brands have hailed from Birmingham, Bourneville, Cadbury and HP Sauce. The city is also famous for being the home of the balti, a distinctive form of curry which is cooked in a shallow wok type pan, and served in the pan with naan bread, the Sparkbrook and Sparkhill districts of the city are known worldwide as the “Balti Belt”. Food from every corner of the globe is available in Birmingham, whether Caribbean, Lebanese, Vietnamese and even the occasional English meal!
Birmingham is also an intensely cultural city, with an endless variety of theatres, opera, comedy clubs and music venues to keep even the most demanding culture vulture happy. Home to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, one of Britain’s finest orchestras, as well as the excellent Birmingham Rep theatre company, whose versions of Shakespeare are as memorable as they are excellent.
