City Information: It was in 1867 that Jack Swilling was riding his horse through the barren land that was to become the city of Phoenix, noticing the quality of the soil being turned up by his horse’s hooves he decided to set up a farming community, after digging an irrigation channel from the Salt River. The community became known as Swilling’s Mill and in time it was to form the seed that grew into the city of Phoenix. In 1881 Phoenix was incorporated as a city, and has since grown to be the largest state capital in the United States.
