City Information: Deriving its name from the words “minne” and “polis” meaning “water” in Dakota and “city” in Greek respectively, Minneapolis is indeed the City of Water. Within the city limits are 24 small lakes as well as the Mississippi river, and it was this that inspired the city’s first schoolmaster, Charles Hoag, to give the city its very descriptive name.

Minneapolis was incorporated in 1856 and has enjoyed remarkable growth, making it one of the largest cities in the United States. Minneapolis was incorporated as a city in 1867 and swallowed the neighboring St Anthony about 5 years later.

The 1920s were to be one of the most notorious periods in Minneapolis’ history as the city was rife with gangsterism, and was home to the infamous Kid Cann who ran his crime network from the West Hotel.

From the 1960s onward, the city has gone through a major period of urban renewal with nearly half of the city having been torn down and rebuilt, including the inner-city slums. It was during this wave of regeneration that the city lost a large number of its historical buildings, including the Metropolitan Building.

Modern Minneapolis is a clean, modern and welcoming city with a wide range of restaurants and cultural activities such as the theatre and opera.
