An introduction to Barcelona

Barcelona is so well-known around the world that you might be forgiven for thinking it is the capital of Spain. In fact Barcelona is merely the capital of the country's Catalan region, yet it has well and truly cemented itself as the top city destination for tourists visiting Spain. Barcelona mixes modern with old with an elegance that few other cities in Europe have achieved. And its reliable Metro system whisks leg-weary travellers between the city's various neighbourhoods with remarkable ease and affordability. Whether you're looking for a weekend break or a longer stay in a holiday apartment in Barcelona, the city is sure to delight with its fabulous architecture, culinary delights, fascinating museums and fine shopping.

Barcelona in brief

Barcelona is located on the north-east coast of Spain's Iberian peninsula, giving visitors a great combination of beach and city break. And its beaches are surprisingly clean for such a vibrant and bustling city! The centre is home to more than 1.6 million people, but the true population is much higher if you include the sprawling suburbs.

Millions of tourists visit Barcelona every year and the city has welcomed this by making itself one of the most tourist-friendly destinations in Europe. However, as with most places, this is reflected in the prices, and visitors are advised to look outside the main tourist areas if they want to experience the best food at the most attractive prices. Similarly, hotels can be expensive, so it's worth considering high quality hotel apartments in Barcelona instead.

What not to miss

There's plenty to see and do in Barcelona, even if you're planning a lengthy city break. Here are some of the key attractions that you definitely shouldn't miss:

La Rambla - This 1.2km-long tree-lined pedestrian mall stretches through the centre of the city from Barri Gòtic to El Raval. No trip to Barcelona would be complete without a wander along at least part of this famous street, which remains full of life from early morning until late at night. La Rambla itself is filled with pricy souvenir kiosks, street performers and over-priced food stalls. If you want something a little more authentic and easier on the wallet, wander down one of the many side-streets that lead off the main thoroughfare.

La Sagrada Família - If you've ever received a postcard from Barcelona, the chances are it will have featured this incredible building. Started almost a century ago and as-yet unfinished, this Gaudí masterpiece is already a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The church itself stuns with its height and the intricacy of its architecture. If you want to go inside, remember to book your ticket in advance, as the queues outside this famous landmark will take up a large chunk of your time otherwise.

Other Gaudí works - La Sagrada Família may be the most famous of Antoni Gaudí's designs, but it's far from the only one in this city. This most respected architect in the history of Spain was born a Catalan and many of his buildings and artworks still stand in Barcelona today. Notable examples include Park Güell, La Casa Batlló and La Casa Milà. All of these can be seen from the outside for free, but if you plan to go inside any of the buildings you may want to consider getting discounted tickets from the tourist office first.

City beaches - Barcelona boasts seven beaches, many of which are popular with both locals and visitors alike. In fact, National Geographic has named Barcelona the number one Beach City in the world. And while you won't encounter the finest sand at its beaches, the city's coastal stretches are pleasant and clean.

How to get to the city

The main airport, El Prat, has a reliable rail connection to the city. Barcelona is also served by two regional airports - Reus and Girona - which are located more than 60 miles away and are therefore trickier to get to. The cheapest way to reach Barcelona from these airports is by bus. There's little point in taking a taxi to your holiday apartment in Barcelona, as these are expensive and are likely to get stuck in traffic.

When to go

Barcelona is popular throughout the year, but the summer months are understandably particularly busy. This goes for both the city itself and the beaches, which are busiest between June and September.

If you're planning a trip to Spain, why not take a look at our holiday apartments in Barcelona? We offer high quality accommodation in key central locations that is often much more affordable than staying in a hotel.

La ubicación es buena, el apartamento era amplio, completo y limpio. La atención recibida en la oficina por Horacio fue excelente, nos dio un modem WiFi para poder conectarnos a internet el cual funcionó perfecto.

The apartment was perfectly located with many sights within walking distance and many transportation options were in walking distance as well. It was a nice, clean apartment with plenty of space for 4-6 people. There were several cafés, restaurants, and supermarkets close by so you had the option to prepare you own food or just walk to something close by. The staff was very friendly and accommodating at check-in, and anytime we called.

The location was very nice. The neighborhood was quiet, yet it was only a short walk to La Rambla and the Barri Gotic. Additionally, the building was very quiet. The apartment had plently of room for the 4 of us.

We were really pleased with the location of the apartment. We were very comfortable using the underground rail network so being close to a station gave us the best of both worlds, access tot he Ramblas and Gothic area was a few stops on the train. We traveled in on the train from the airport (recommended) so Passeg station was perfect. The apartment felt very safe, as did the local area, we had children with us and never once felt concerned. The apartment was well equipped for self catering, and the overall apartment was spacious and clean. The communication with the agent was excellent, not having to collect keys from the office was also a bonus.

The apartment was very well situated. Within walking distance of La Sagrada Familia and Placa de Catalunya. There is a tourist information office, supermarket and subway station within 2-3 minutes walk. Inside the apartment the dining area was very nicely situated for a little early evening sunshine. It was also nice for our daughter to enjoy her own en suite bathroom for a week. If and when we return to Barcelona Passeig de Gracia 12 will not be our immediate choice but it will go straight on to our shortlist.

Location was very good. Easy to get around the city by Underground and bus. Several grocery stores and restaurants in the area. Very nice and helpful landlady. Bus stop right outside the house. Bus nr 45 takes directly to the center of Barcelona or to the beaches on Barceloneta. The best part of the apartment was the terrace. The terrace was really large and was the perfect Place to sit spending the day in the city or on the beach. The rest of the apartment was good. No luxury, but value for money.

It was a nice little apartment, living room, bathroom, kitchen and bedroom plus a huge terrace on the top of the building. Very nice indeed. In addition the hostess was very nice and friendly and went out of her way to make me feel welcomed and comfortable.
