An introduction to Dubrovnik

If you're looking for a holiday destination with good weather, plenty of sightseeing opportunities and real natural beauty, Dubrovnik could be the ideal place for you. The Croatian city is a well-known Mediterranean tourist destination and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It suffered significant damage during artillery attacks in 1991-92, with more than half of its buildings affected. But the majority of the damage has since been repaired and Dubrovnik is a charming and attractive city.

Dubrovnik in brief

Dubrovnik is located on the Adriatic Sea, in the southernmost part of Croatia. It's a small city, with a population of approximately 43,000, and the attractive Old Town with its white stone buildings and red-tiled roofs inhabits a small area right on the coast. Dubrovnik is famous for its medieval walled city, unique Renaissance architecture and wonderfully blue sea - it's little wonder that it's known as the 'Pearl of the Adriatic'!

Visitors also have a range of accommodation to choose from, regardless of their budget. And those staying in holiday apartments in Dubrovnik can really make the most of their travel money in this charming city.

What not to miss

Dubrovnik is undoubtedly a city of culture, with a rich history and stunning setting more than justifying its World Heritage status. Here are some things that you might want to put on your to-do list:

The Rector's Palace - This is definitely one of the most impressive structures in Dubrovnik. This Gothic and Renaissance palace houses the history department of the museum of Dubrovnik, as well as paintings and important state documents.

St Blasius Church - St Blasius is omnipresent throughout Dubrovnik, with statues of the patron saint featuring on every corner of the city walls. This Baroque style church was erected in honour of St Blasius in 1715 and is based on St Mauritius Church in Venice. The building features a large dome, impressive marble altars and a valuable gothic statue of the saint.

Franciscan Monastery - Work on this historic monastery began in 1317, with construction continuing for hundreds of years. The extensive site features a substantial old library, a tranquil Romanesque cloister and an imposing Baroque style church. There is also a fascinating pharmacy museum.

Lovrijenac Fortress - This impressive fortress was built on a 37m-high rock overlooking the sea. The original fort is thought to have been constructed in the early 11th century, but the current structure largely dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries.

How to get to the city

Dubrovnik's international airport is approximately 12 miles from the city centre, making it an ideal arrival point for overseas visitors. Most tourists travel on to the city itself by bus or taxi.

When to go

Dubrovnik is an all-year-round destination thanks to its delightful climate, which grants it long, dry summers and mild winters. The average temperature is 10 degrees Celsius in the winter and 26 degrees in summer.
