Berlin in brief

Berlin is located on the River Spree in the north-east of Germany. Approximately 3.3 million people live in Berlin, enjoying the city's abundance of green spaces, woodlands and waterways. The city is an important political centre and regularly hosts international conferences. However, it is also an important tourist destination, welcoming about 135 million day visitors every year and offering more than 125,000 beds.

What not to miss

There are simply too many sights and attractions in Berlin to mention, but these are just a handful of must-sees:

Brandenburg Gate - Built in 1791, this neoclassical arch is one of the most recognised of German landmarks. The structure was commissioned by King Frederick William II of Prussia and was restored between 2000 and 2002 after being seriously damaged during the Second World War.

Berlin Cathedral - One of Berlin's key attractions, this beautiful cathedral features buildings that date back to the 15th century. However, the cornerstone of the main cathedral wasn't laid until 1894 and the building underwent major restorations commencing in 1975 after sustaining serious damage during the war.

Charlottenburg Palace - Berlin's largest palace was built at the end of the 17th century and features a host of intricate baroque and rococo décor. The palace was damaged during the Second World War but has since been restored and, along with its large formal garden, is now a major tourist attraction.

Berlin Wall Memorial - The Berlin Wall Memorial (Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer) commemorates the city's division by the infamous Berlin Wall in 1961 and its subsequent fall in 1989. Created in 1998, the monument features a 60m section of the former border, giving visitors a tiny glimpse of what life in the shadows of the wall must have been like.

How to get to the city

Berlin is served by two airports - Berlin Tegel Airport and Schönefeld Airport. Tegel Airport is used by airlines such as Air Berlin and Lufthansa, while low-cost airlines tend to land at Schönefeld. Visitors to Berlin can also arrive in the city via any number of train routes, with long-distance rail lines arriving from a number of other countries in Europe.

When to go

Tourists on city breaks are rarely that concerned about the weather, but Berlin is definitely at its best in the summer. Much of what the city has to offer is outdoors, including its attractive waterways and green spaces. For the best weather, consider travelling to Berlin between April and September.
