An introduction to Rome

A weekend city break to the 'eternal city' of Rome is only likely to do one thing - leave visitors wishing they had booked a longer trip! The Italian capital has such a long and illustrious history that tourists cannot help but be impressed. Much of this history is still in evidence and is well worth visiting for as long as you can manage.

Rome in brief

Rome is located near to the western coast of central Italy and is one of the oldest cities still in existence today. It was the capital city of the ancient Roman empire and remains the capital of Italy today. Rome is home to some 2.8 million people, while up to ten million more visit the city each year. This means that it is the third most popular European city destination after London and Paris.

What not to miss

It's easy to see why Rome is such a tourist magnet - it has impressive architecture, ancient sites, culture, art and much more. The following are among Rome's most famous and impressive features:

Colosseum - This ancient Roman amphitheatre is the largest such structure in the world. Completed in 80 AD, it is located in the heart of Rome and is thought to have held between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980 and is one of the city's most popular tourist attractions.

Trevi Fountain - Few tourists travel to Rome without having their picture taken next to the city's largest baroque fountain. Dating back to 1732, the fountain is 26.3m high and 49.15m wide and was designed by the architect Nicola Salvi, although he died before his masterpiece was completed. It has since appeared in numerous films and is one of the most recognised of Rome's landmarks.

Vatican Museums - Some of the most important Renaissance masterpieces ever created are on display in these museums, which are located within the boundaries of Vatican City, the administrative seat of Catholicism. Millions of people visit the museums each year to see works by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Titian and Caravaggio. Visitors would also be foolish to miss the Sistine Chapel with its famous frescoes by Michelangelo.

St Peter's Basilica - Also located within Vatican City, this late Renaissance church opened in 1626 and was designed by Michelangelo and others. It is one of the largest churches in the world and is one of the holiest Catholic sites, purportedly being the burial site of Saint Peter, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus. Many popes have also been interred there over the years.

How to get to the city

There are two main airports in Rome - Fiumicino International and Ciampino - which are both about 45 minutes from the city centre. Visitors arriving at either airport can easily reach the centre of town by bus or taxi.

When to go

August is a popular time of year to visit Rome, but it is also the hottest and therefore one of the least pleasant times. If mild weather is important to you, then the best times to visit are likely to be spring and autumn. However, if you don't mind rain and cooler weather, consider heading to Rome during the winter months.
