An introduction to Amsterdam
Conjure up an image of Amsterdam in your mind's eye and you'll probably see a collage of canals, windmills and tulips. And it's little wonder, as these are some of the things that this attractive city is indeed well known for. However, there's far more to the Dutch capital than these stereotypes. Read on to get a greater taste for this historic city.
Amsterdam in brief
Amsterdam is located in the west of The Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. More than 800,000 people live in the city of Amsterdam, rising to more than 2.3 million in the greater metropolitan area. In addition to those living in Amsterdam, the city also welcomes over 4.63 million international visitors each year. A significant proportion of accommodation is comprised of four and five-star hotels, meaning that travellers on a budget are often better off finding a holiday apartment in Amsterdam.
What not to miss
Visitors to the Dutch capital are spoilt for choice when it comes to things to do. Here is a sample of Amsterdam's main attractions:
The Rijksmuseum - This national museum in Amsterdam South focuses on art and history and features approximately 8,000 individual objects, some of which date back to the 13th century, when Amsterdam was little more than a fishing village. The museum's main building recently reopened following a ten-year renovation project costing EUR 375 million.
Anne Frank House - Few people have not heard of Anne Frank and her family's hiding place during the Second World War. The tiny hidden rooms at the rear of a building on the Prinsengracht canal have been turned into a poignant museum, which serves to highlight the confined space in which the Jewish diarist and her family remained hidden for more than two years until their arrest.
Amsterdam's canals - The city's beautiful canal network is best enjoyed from the water. Visitors to the city can float along the famous waterways at all times of the day and well into the night. Everything is on offer, from simple guided tours to evening cruises complete with three-course dinners and cocktails. There can be no better way to get your bearings.
Red light district - Amsterdam's red light district is a major tourist trap. Most visit the city's oldest neighbourhood out of simple curiosity and one of the best ways to see the district is to join a guided tour. This is likely to take in the city's oldest parish church, Oude Kerk, along with several infamous red light windows and the Amsterdam Sex Museum.
How to get to the city
Amsterdam is an extremely easy city to visit. Schiphol International Airport is close to the city centre and visitors can take an inexpensive direct rail link from the airport to Amsterdam's central station.
When to go
Tourists tend to prefer the months between April and October, with the best weather occurring in July and August. The Dutch tulip season is particularly popular, with the famous Keukenhof Gardens - the largest flower garden in the world - opening in late March.
If you're planning a trip to The Netherlands, why not take a look at our holiday apartments in Amsterdam? We offer high quality accommodation in key central locations that is often much more affordable than staying in a hotel.

Everything was lovely. The beds were fab.

We especially liked the location for it's centrality and easy access to most areas of interest. Amsterdam is such a walkable city and has such great transit options via the tram system that most locations around the city are likely great. This apartment is very close to Dam Square and the area called the Nine Streets which is delightful. It's also very close to the Red Light District, but you'd never know unless you went looking for it. It's situated just off of one of Amsterdam's main roads which is not too pretty, but the apartment itself is on a narrow and very picturesque street that has a very lovely and quaint café right across the street, great for an early morning breakfast before you begin your day. There are also a couple of restaurants, bakeries, bars, a 'coffee house' (I think) and a small grocery store on this little street and at the end of the street is a beautiful little canal that belies the fact that the Red Light District is just beyond. A canal cruise company is literally right outside the door, so provided a perfect and convenient activity for a jetlagged first day with cruises leaving every half hour. We very much appreciated the fact that the landlord was waiting for us upon arrival and transported our significant amount of heavy luggage up the 3 flights of very, very steep and very, very narrow set of stairs. The apartment was very spacious and was great since we had so much luggage and could really spread out. There were only two of us, but the apartment sleeps 5. I was travelling with my daughter who was staying on in the Netherlands for a year to go to university. The wifi connection was great. The beds were also surprisingly comfortable. I say surprisingly because the apartment is definitely not a luxury apartment. Also it is worth mentioning the apartment is an easy 20 minute walk from the central train station. It is very easy to take the train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal, and then walk to the apartment, rolling your luggage behind. This is what we did upon arrival, but because we had so much luggage and we're pressed for time upon departure, we flagged a cab back to the train station. We were warned the taxi driver would try to rip us off because it was such a short distance, but that was not at all the case.

In this appartement we liked very much the beautiful view from the living room and to stay the center of Amsterdam. We could walk from Gravelandse to all museums and didn't need bus or metro.

Ideal location, a short walk to the centre of Old Town Amsterdam. The houseboat itself was exactly as expected, well equipped (although a toaster instead of a sandwich maker would be handy). Very spacious living area with adequate sleeping cabins. Good communication with the hostess prior to our arrival, she was also very welcoming and helpful. Great & quirky accomodation - what else would you want in Amsterdam...

The Wieger apartment was a fantastic location for our 4-week family trip to Amsterdam. Gorgeous views of the Rijksmuseum across the street, easy access to public transport, and a grocery store right across the street. We couldn't have picked a better "home base" to explore the city. The apartment is filled with light, and has gorgeous high ceilings. The rooms are a good size and we never felt cramped with 6 people staying there (our family of five and a nanny). The bathrooms appear to have been newly renovated and the kitchen was large and very up to date.

Fantastyczne miejsce!W cichej spokojnej ulicy.

Customers' positive opinions
Management collected us from Rail Station and advised us on any matters we had questions about. They willingly assisted us with baggage to and from our apartment in view of steep staircase. Management assisted us by making available the OV-Chipkaart for local transport. Apartment was well presented with modern facilities and included basic supplies eg. sugar, milk, coffee, tea, to make the start of our stay comfortable.

Viel Spass euch.
Very nice and warm place located in a cool district. Entirely equiped, we had all we needed in the apartment, we'll definitely come back!

Customers' positive opinions
We've been there around Ascension Day and had a very nice long weekend there. The rooms on the boot are very nice and perfect for two to three persons. You enter via the control cabin, where you can enjoy a drink during rains, sitting dry and cosy, having a good lookout on the city. Steep steps go down one level to the living room. Steep means, it's like a ladder and you go down backwards. The living room consists mainly of a big table, a few shelves and features an old radio. Smoking was allowed basically, but it didn't smell bad or so. There is a miniature kitchen, providing all you could need for a short stay: two hot plates, coffee machine, microwave and a refrigerator. You will also find cutlery, pots and the like. The owner (and also visitors before us) took care to provide us with some basic commodities, so we didn't have to go shopping immediately. We found two cold cans of beer in the fridge, coffee, jam and some other stuff at our disposal, which was very convenient. Some more steps down is the sleeping room. There is a double and a single, some more shelves and two very small, but functional and clean toilet and shower rooms. The single bed is positioned under a rooflight, for which there is no curtain. If you are a light sleeper and want to sleep late, maybe bring a sleeping mask or so. Be aware there is no TV, and the radio does not allow to plug in other devices via USB or a 3.5 jack. If you want mediatainment, bring your own. Big plus: there is internet, both via cable and wireless. WLAN reception is low though and was only possible up in the control cabin, but there is an ethernet cable in the sleeping room, so you could hook up your own devices. Being on deck, there are some low chairs and a table at the other end of the ship, so you can sit outside and enjoy yourselves, weather provided. We were also given two bikes by the owner, which we could use for free, and those really hit the spot. Going for the city or the food store came down to a relaxed 5 minutes bike ride rather than a 15 minutes walk. And riding around Amsterdam on a bike was such a breeze, perfectly fun and no stress at all, despite my first impressions on the traffic. So, thumbs up for apartment and owner, we will definitely stay there again.
Franchement, l'accueil était super, la péniche très propre et très bien équipée. Nous avons adoré.
