Kaliningrad is the main city of the Kaliningrad Oblast, a Russian region separated from the Russian Federation by the Baltic countries. Being a seaport, it has always played a major role in the area, although through its long history it has been ruled by different countries and known by several names, of which probably the most famous is Königsberg. Founded in the 13th Century by the Teutonic Knights during their conquest of Prussia, it later passed later to the Duchy of Prussia and then to the German Empire. After World War II, the entire region became part of the USSR.
The centuries of various reigns have left many traces in the city's architecture, making it a fascinating place to visit.
