Valencia in brief

Valencia is located on the banks of the River Turia, on the eastern coast of the Iberian peninsula. It is one of the oldest cities in the country and enjoyed a particularly influential period during the 15th and 16th centuries. Nowadays it is known as a cultural hub, with visitors staying in holiday apartments in Valencia treated to a variety of exhibitions, musical performances, museums and architectural highlights. And of course, the city - as with many tourist destinations in Spain - is well-known for its delicious cuisine.

What not to miss

Valencia is the ideal city for those in search of a short break, with history and culture simply oozing from the narrow medieval streets of the old town. Some of the highlights include:

Valencia Cathedral - Whatever your architectural preference, there's a good chance you'll find something to smile about in Valencia's cathedral. Much of the structure was built in the Gothic style in the 13th and 15th centuries, but the cathedral also features Romanesque, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical styles.

Opera House - The city's opera house is part of the sleek City of Arts and Sciences complex, Valencia's most important tourist destination from the modern era. As well as operas, the four auditoriums host musical and theatrical performances, while visitors can also enjoy 87,000 sq m of landscaping and water features.

Mercado Central - Spain is known for its public markets, and this is one of the oldest in Europe. Visitors are treated to an array of amazing fresh produce and local wines amid impressive architecture.

Turia Gardens - This vast green space was once a river bed, which has been converted into an impressive park since the water was diverted along a new course following floods in the mid-20th century. The park accommodates walkers, cyclists and athletes, as well as featuring artworks, a children's adventure playground and cafes.

How to get to the city

Valencia Airport is located just 9km from the city centre. Once passengers have arrived at the airport, they can choose between the regular bus service and the slick Metro, which goes to the town centre and the city's main train station.

When to go

The city boasts a wonderful subtropical climate, with long summers and mild winters. The maximum daytime temperature in January ranges from 10 to 20 degrees Celsius, meaning it is an attractive destination even in the winter months. Of course this time of year also offers the promise of smaller crowds.
