An introduction to Glasgow
Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland, is arguably one of the UK's most transformed urban areas in recent years. Once holding a somewhat dubious reputation thanks to its industrial past and notoriously poor standards of living, Glasgow has become a real cultural highlight, boasting style, cool shopping and diverse entertainment. If you're looking for inspiration for a European city break, Glasgow should certainly feature high up on your list of possibilities.
Glasgow in brief
Glasgow is located in Scotland's West Central Lowlands, on the banks of the River Clyde. Once a small rural settlement, it is now a major seaport, financial centre and business hub. The Greater Glasgow area is currently home to around 1.2 million people, with just under 600,000 living in the city itself. Since being named the European City of Culture in 1990, Glasgow has really made its mark on the tourist trail, and its forthcoming hosting of the Commonwealth Games in 2014 will further enhance its reputation.
What not to miss
It's impossible to miss the impressive architecture as you walk around the city, but there are certain landmarks and attractions that you should definitely try to see while staying in your holiday apartment in Glasgow:
Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum - This is Scotland's most popular free visitor attraction. Established in 1901 and housed in an impressive Victorian building, it contains approximately 8,000 objects of interest, with collections ranging from natural history to art. The museum reopened in 2006 following extensive refurbishment work costing more than £28 million.
The Burrell Collection - This superb collection of artworks is widely regarded as one of the most important in the world. Gathered together by Sir William Burrell, a wealthy Glasgow ship owner, the collection includes more than 9,000 individual works of art - including pieces by Cezanne and Degas - and was gifted to Glasgow in 1944.
Glasgow City Chambers - Located in George Square, this prestigious Victorian building is one of the most beautiful in the whole of the UK. It was completed in 1888 and has housed the city council's headquarters for more than a century.
Loch Lomond - If you have time for a day trip, consider making the short journey to Loch Lomond. Situated less than an hour's drive from Glasgow, this freshwater lake is the largest inland stretch of water in Great Britain. Activities at the loch include boating, kayaking and cycling, while many people simply visit to admire the view.
How to get to the city
There are two international airports - Glasgow International Airport and Glasgow Prestwick Airport - and an extensive rail network. The city also has an underground metro system and many bus services.
When to go
The weather in Glasgow tends to be mildest in the spring and summer months. However, Glasgow has a packed calendar of festivals and events, so it's worth taking a look at what's on and planning your visit to coincide with something that interests you.
If you're planning a trip to Scotland, why not take a look at our holiday apartments in Glasgow? We offer high quality accommodation in key central locations that is often much more affordable than staying in a hotel.

The location of Admiral's Gate apartment was extremely convenient for attending sporting events conducted at the SECC during the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The apartment was close to the SECC & also within a short walk to shops, bars & restuarants in Argyle St in Glasgow. With multiple bedrooms & 3 bathrooms the apartment was ideal for between 6 - 8 people.
