OLD TOWN APARTMENTS
Manchester
In his campaign against the tribe of the Brigantes, Gnaeus Julius Agricola built a wooden fort at the meeting point of the rivers Medlock and Irwell in 79 AD. It was given the name Mamucium, which means "breast-shaped hill" in Celtic.
The name "Manchester" comes from the Anglo-Saxon word Mameceaster, wwhere we have an Anglo-Saxon place name incorporating an earlier Celtic name.
Around the 16th Century, Manchester had a thriving wool trade and had become a prosperous market town. The collegiate church was completed around 1510. Its beautifully carved choir stalls were completed around this time and the Earl of Derby had a chapel built after he returned safely from battle.
After the English Reformation, the collegiate church was reestablished as a Protestant institution. Dr. John Dee, who was called "Queen Elizabeth's Merlin", became the warden of this institution.
Manchester expanded to become the largest producer in the cotton industry of Lancashire, and was given the nickname "Cottonopolis". It was during this period that Manchester's famous canal system was constructed, in addition to the well-known Liverpool and Manchester Railway.
The last quarter of the 19th Century was Manchester's golden age, when several excellent public buildings, such as the Town Hall, were constructed. The city's multinational ambiance contributed to a lively cultural world, as epitomized in the Hallé Orchestra.
Manchester became an industrial manufacturing city during World War II, with the Avro aircraft factory which produced a great number of planes for the RAF, the Avro Lancaster bomber being the most well-known of them. Due to this, Manchester experienced heavy bombing from 1940 to 1941, during The Blitz. The Luftwaffe attacked several times, especially during 1941's Christmas Blitz, which damaged and destroyed large sections of the historical city centre, as well as the Cathedral.
During the 1950s, Manchester began its ascent to the highest levels of the football world. In spite of the Munich air disaster, Manchester United F.C. became one of the most popular football clubs in the world, until, in the 1990s, it rose to the pinnacle of the sport.
Manchester's major position in the Industrial Revolution was regained and the city developed into a leading research and development area. The city helped make vital contributions to the computer revolution. Alan Turing, the father of today's computers, was at Manchester University when his idea of the stored program led to the Manchester Small-Scale Experimental Machine, on which the first computer program was run. In 1949, this work was followed by the construction of the Manchester Mark I.
The IRA detonated a massive bomb in the center of the city on the 15th of June, 1996 at 11:20 AM. It was the largest bomb ever detonated on British soil. Luckily, warnings were given an hour beforehand, so there was time to evacuate the immediate area. Even so, the bomb caused over 200 injuries, though no one was killed.
Manchester's "Gay Village" is located in the city's Canal Street area. The city's status as the "Gay Capital of the UK" was enhanced when it hosted the annual Europride Festival.
The center of Manchester has undergone significant development since the IRA bombing of 1996, thanks in part to the XVII Commonwealth Games. Major areas of the city have been demolished and then re-developed or otherwise modernized. Apartment buildings have been converted from old mills, which help to give the city a more modern look and ambiance.
