An introduction to Krakow
Krakow is one of the oldest cities in Poland, dating back to the seventh century. It is located on the Vistula River and is the second largest of the country's cities. Beautiful architecture, extensive collections of artworks and ancient charm await those who travel to this well-preserved city. It is also one of the more affordable places to visit in Europe, with tourists able to find cheap cuisine, local beers and holiday apartments without having to look too hard.
Krakow in brief
Krakow is located in Lesser Poland, a historical region in the south of the country. It was the capital of Poland between the 11th and 16th centuries and remains one of the most significant centres of academic, cultural and artistic life. The city itself is home to about 760,000 people and some 7.3 million tourists passed through in 2009. Most come to sense centuries' worth of history, while many also make the short journey to the former Nazi concentration camp at nearby Auschwitz.
What not to miss
Krakow has much to offer visitors, including a large number of historical monuments. Here are some attractions that should definitely make the short-list:
Market Square - The main square is located in the centre of the city's Old Town. Dating back to the 13th century, it is the largest medieval town square in Europe and is surrounded by historic buildings, including townhouses, palaces and churches. The impressive Renaissance-style Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) cannot be missed in the centre of the square, while the Gothic towers of St Mary's Basilica tower above the square.
Wawel Castle - This Gothic castle was built in the 14th century and is of great cultural significance. Poland's kings lived in the castle for centuries, but it is now a leading art museum, featuring paintings, sculptures, tapestries and much more.
National Art Museum - This museum houses approximately 780,000 objects of art, ranging from classical archaeological pieces to modern art.
Wieliczka salt mine - The salt mine was built in the 13th century and produced salt until 2007. It now features statues, chapels and even an entire cathedral carved from rock salt. The mine is located in the town of Wieliczka, not far from Krakow, and attracts approximately 1.2 million people each year.
How to get to the city
Most international visitors arrive in Krakow via the John Paul II International Airport, which is located 11km away from the city. The journey from the airport to the city is easy thanks to direct trains which take just 15 minutes to cover the ground.
When to go
The most pleasant times of year to visit Krakow are widely felt to be spring and autumn. At these times the weather is mild, but the city is not completely overrun with tourists. Those visiting in the winter months will find the city cold but beautiful.
If you're planning a trip to Poland, why not take a look at our holiday apartments in Krakow? We offer high quality accommodation in key central locations that is often much more affordable than staying in a hotel.

We had a problem with the boiler and I walked round to reception to ask if they could send somebody to sort it out. Had I not found a short cut the engineer would have been at the apartment before I walked back. First class service.
The location of the apartments is absolutely excellent. The fittings and cleanliness are excellent.

I liked the whole experience of booking the appartment, the helpfull staff who arranged the taxi from the airport. I was concerned that we would be driven to the office to collect keys, but was really pleased to be taken straight to the apartment and the helpfull staff who arranged the taxi to take us back to the airport.
The appartment was a great size with everything you need and more, cooker, iron ironing board, The leather setee was a little bit ripped and dated, but we didn't spent that much time in to worry to much about that.
The appartment was in a great central place, within easy walking distance to the main square, the castle and Jewish quarter. shops, trams etc.,

Judita CzechRepublic, stayed in Krakow
The location is great - very convenient to the market square. Also the apartment is pretty quiet. The windows face onto a quiet inner courtyard so no matter how many partiers are on the streets they do not annoy. Also the "Chicago" nightclub downstairs is really nice. It never looks open but if you venture down there you will find a hidden gem in Krakow! Beautifully appointed and fit out with nice staff and good drinks! Also there is a great little breakfast/lunch spot called Domowe Przysmaki if you go out onto the street, turn left and go down about a full block. FInally if you are there in Christmas be sure to go into the the Historical Museum of Kraków which is just down the street on the Market Square.

Great location. Well equipped. Beautiful, old-fashioned safe for the keys.
Jaroslaw Poland, stayed in Krakow
The location of the Star apartment is what I think my party enjoyed the most! It was only 2-3 blocks from the main square and as we were staying over the Christmas holiday this made the festive holiday market and activities so accessible. Also, we were no more then 15 mins walk (with BIG suitcases) to the central train station.
Additionally, staying in an "apartment" in such a unique location (we were on a street surrounded by homes, merchants and restaurants) instantly transports one into a sense of being part of the neighborhood and of truly experiencing what Krakow (old town) has to offer.
Overall, the apartment was just as pictured and we were so happy upon arrival. 3 bedrooms and 2 baths and plenty of living and kitchen space for our party of 5 adult friends.

TADEUSZ France, stayed in Krakow
The apartment was clean and had everything we needed for our short stay. The access to the major attractions and to public transportation was very easy from our location. We really enjoyed the heated floors because it was just above freezing outside most days we were visiting. Additionally, the was minimal street noise that we could hear.
