The first FIFA tournament in the Baltic States will start on September 12 at Kaunas Arena

By preparing and inviting volunteers at the last minute, Kaunas, Vilnius and Klaipeda are preparing for their role as hosts of FIFA Futsal World Cup Lithuania 2021 cities. The tournament – the first FIFA competition to be held in Lithuania – was originally scheduled for 2020, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

What is Futsal?

Similar to five-player football, Futsal is an association football game played mostly on a closed hard court smaller than a football field. The match involves two teams of five players each, including a goalkeeper. The first FIFA Futsal World Cup took place in 1989.

In addition to the Lithuanian hosts, who will also make their debut in the tournament as players, 23 more teams from six separate continental competitions have qualified. The 24 teams were divided into six groups of four.

Lithuania is in Group A, and on September 12. He will meet with Venezuela at the opening of the tournament in Kaunas Arena. Argentina defending the title of champion is in Group F, where he clashed with the USA for the first time in Vilnius. The five-time winner Brazil (last trophy in 2012) enters Group D and will meet Vietnam in the opening match in Klaipeda.

Change tournament rules

Emblem The tournament was inspired by the achievements of Lithuanian natural treasures and technology. It boasts oak leaves, a bouquet of Lithuanian mythology and a symbol of strength, fields of the country’s flag and meadows, and a laser-driven futsal square and ball.

Stork Ivartitas the mascot, the name derived from a Lithuanian word meaning goal (“ivartis”), is a clear reference to the excitement and many goals inherent in futsal. The stork has been the national bird of Lithuania since 1973. Traditionally considered the bearer of success, babies and peace, the stork embodies the ecological diversity and natural beauty of the Baltic States.

Tickets and precautions

Tickets go on sale from August 20th. until the final day, subject to availability. Every futsal fan can now skip the ticket queue by visiting FIFA.com/tickets.

Due to the situation with the more contagious Delta variant, special rules will apply. Viewers will be required to provide proof of recovery, a negative PCR test result, or a COVID-19 vaccination certificate with one of the EU-approved vaccines. These include Janssen (Johnson & Johnson), Comirnaty (Pfizer / BioNTech), Moderna and Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca).

As the competition will take place indoors, where the risk of infection is higher, fans are also advised to wear a mask covering their nose and mouth at all times.
